About This Site

The Camera Gear is written for hobby photographers who want straight answers before they spend money. We cover the support and protection gear that makes the biggest difference to everyday shooting: tripods for long exposures, sling bags for carrying a camera on the trail, rain covers for wet weather, reflectors for better light on food and portraits, and cleaning kits for keeping glass clear in humid air. Every article is written from real use, in plain language, with the trade-offs left in.

Gear and Field Safety

Photography takes people to slippery and changeable places. Wet rocks near waterfalls and along the coast are far more slippery than they look, so watch your footing before you watch your viewfinder, stay behind railings and posted barriers, and never set up a tripod where you would have to step backward to see the screen.

Streams in rainforest areas can rise quickly after heavy rain upstream, even when it is not raining where you stand. Check local conditions, leave if the water turns brown or starts rising, and never cross a flooded stream for a shot. Along the shore, keep your back away from the ocean and watch for large sets of waves.

A tripod with an extended center column and a heavy camera can tip in wind. Spread the legs fully, keep the column low, and keep a hand near the camera in gusts. Do not leave a tripod standing on a busy path where someone could trip over a leg.

A large reflector catches wind like a sail and can redirect strong sunlight into eyes, including your own and your pets'. Never aim a reflector or a lens at the sun, and fold a reflector before moving it in wind.

Use lens cleaning fluids only on optical glass as directed, keep them away from children and pets, and never spray liquid directly onto a camera body or into a lens mount. Rain covers protect against light rain and splashes; they are not a substitute for a waterproof housing, and no cover makes a camera safe to submerge.
